What Is the 30/30/30 Rule for Fire?

The 30/30/30 Rule describes dangerous bushfire conditions where:
  • temperatures exceed 30°C
  • humidity falls below 30%
  • wind speeds exceed 30 km/h
When these three conditions occur together, bushfires can spread rapidly and create intense ember attack.

Why Are 30/30/30 Conditions So Dangerous?

Each part of the rule increases fire danger in a different way.

Hot Temperatures Dry Out Vegetation

When temperatures rise above 30°C, grass, leaves and bushland dry out more quickly. Dry vegetation ignites far more easily than moist vegetation.

Low Humidity Removes Moisture From Fuels

Humidity below 30% means there is very little moisture in the air. This causes trees, bark, leaf litter and grass to become highly combustible.

Strong Winds Spread Fire and Embers

Winds above 30 km/h can push flames quickly through bushland while also carrying burning embers long distances ahead of the main fire front. These embers can start spot fires around homes well before the fire itself arrives.

What Does This Mean for Homeowners?

When 30/30/30 conditions are forecast, bushfire risk increases significantly.
